Ketamine for Pain Management in Dogs: A New Option for Comfort and Mobility
I am just back from Las Vegas where I spent two hours with veterinary professionals from all over talking about using ketamine in a new way! There was great attendance and so many great questions and conversations started. There is so much motivation to be better at pain management and this is an exciting new tool- I wanted to share a little more information about it here!
When most people hear the word ketamine, they think of anesthesia or human medical treatments. In recent years, however, ketamine has gained attention as a powerful tool for managing chronic pain—and it’s becoming an increasingly important option in veterinary medicine as well.
At Fryday Veterinary Mobility and Pain Management, we are excited about the growing research and clinical experience showing that ketamine can help dogs with complex pain conditions feel more comfortable and move more easily.
Why Ketamine Works for Pain
Pain is not always just a problem in the joints, muscles, or nerves. Over time, the nervous system itself can become overly sensitive, amplifying pain signals even after the original injury has healed.
This process is called central sensitization, and it is a major driver of many chronic pain conditions in both people and animals.
Ketamine works differently than many traditional pain medications. Instead of simply blocking pain signals, it helps reset how the nervous system processes pain, allowing the brain and spinal cord to become less reactive.
Because of this unique effect, ketamine can be especially helpful for conditions such as:
Chronic osteoarthritis pain
Nerve pain
Back and spinal pain
Persistent pain after injury or surgery
Chronic pain that has not responded well to other medications
Many patients experience improved comfort, better mobility, and improved quality of life when ketamine is used as part of a comprehensive pain management plan.
How Ketamine Can Be Used in Dogs
One of the advantages of ketamine is that it can be delivered in several different ways depending on the patient’s needs.
Injectable treatments
Short ketamine injections can help calm pain pathways and provide relief for certain types of acute or chronic pain.
Intravenous infusions
In some cases, ketamine is administered through a carefully monitored infusion, allowing a controlled dose over time. This approach is commonly used in human pain medicine and is becoming more common in advanced veterinary pain management.
At-home pain pumps
For some patients with severe or complex pain, a portable infusion pump may be used at home to deliver small amounts of medication continuously.
These options allow veterinarians to tailor treatment to each patient, helping maximize comfort while minimizing side effects.
Is Ketamine Safe for Dogs?
Yes—when used appropriately and under veterinary supervision, ketamine has an excellent safety record in veterinary medicine.
Ketamine has actually been used for decades as an anesthetic in animals, and veterinarians are very familiar with its effects and dosing. When used for pain management, the doses are typically much lower than those used for anesthesia, which helps reduce the risk of side effects.
Like any medication, ketamine should always be administered under the guidance of a veterinarian experienced in pain management.
Emerging Research in Dogs
Research on ketamine for chronic pain in dogs is growing quickly. Recent studies suggest that ketamine may help reduce:
Chronic joint pain
Nerve-related pain
Central sensitization
Pain that has not responded to traditional medications
This research mirrors what we have already seen in human medicine, where ketamine has become an important option for difficult-to-treat chronic pain conditions.
A Multimodal Approach to Pain
Ketamine is rarely used alone. Instead, it is typically part of a multimodal pain management plan, which may include:
Therapeutic exercise
Weight management
Joint supplements
Acupuncture
Shockwave therapy
Physical rehabilitation
Targeted medications
By addressing pain from multiple angles, we can often achieve better and more lasting results.
Wondering if Ketamine Might Help Your Dog?
If your dog is struggling with chronic pain, mobility issues, or pain that has not improved with traditional treatments, ketamine may be one option worth exploring.
Every patient is different, and the best treatment plan is always individualized.
